May chanting "City and country, united we stand. Protect our water,
protect our land". They were demonstrating their objections to the
Government’s draft Strategic Land Use policy.
Planning
staff at Hawkesbury Council were not officially notified of the Strategic
Regional Land Use Plan for the Upper Hunter, which maps Putty as an area with
high potential for coal seam gas. As
Putty’s water flows into the Hawkesbury, they and all people living downstream
should have been made aware of the plan as a part of the government’s community
consultation program.

Thousands
of people from farms and environmental groups gathered in Sydney for a mass
rally against the New South Wales Government's land use policy. The unlikely
alliance, which has formed under the name Protect Our Land and Water, marched
to State Parliament at lunchtime. The marchers included members of several
green groups and the lobby group GetUp!, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the
Country Women's Association (CWA) and farmers. They were there to show their
displeasure at the Government's draft Strategic Land Use policy.

THE
Deputy Premier and leader of the NSW Nationals, Andrew Stoner, was heckled and
booed as he tried to reassure a 4000-strong rally of farmers and
environmentalists at NSW Parliament yesterday calling for tougher restrictions
on coal and coal seam gas mining.
The
O'Farrell government remained steadfast that the draft strategic land use
guidelines it has proposed to manage mining and farming are balanced and will
protect agricultural land, despite protesters yesterday claiming the state's
food bowl was at risk.
